Walmart (WMT) will offer home grocery delivery to 100 metro areas, or 40% of the U.S. population, by year-end to compete with Amazon.com (AMZN), Kroger (KR), Costco Wholesale (COST), Target (TGT) and others expanding similar services. Its Jet.com unit will offer same-day delivery in New York City.
Walmart’s home grocery delivery service will expand from six cities currently. Amazon recently offered home delivery via Whole Foods in six cities, along with Amazon Fresh and other delivery options. Target acquired Shipt, an Instacart rival. Instacart serves Walmart, Amazon, Costco and more.
