NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. stocks rose on Monday morning, bolstered by solid gains in the materials and energy sectors.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 143.14 points, or 0.41 percent, to 34,889.39. The S&P 500 added 15.53 points, or 0.35 percent, to 4,406.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 46.62 points, or 0.32 percent, to 14,626.15.
Eight of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors advanced in morning trading, with materials and energy up 1.3 percent and 1 percent, respectively, leading the gainers. Utilities slipped 0.45 percent, the worst-performing group.
Investors look ahead to earnings season as major banks will kick off their third-quarter earnings reports later this week.
For the week ending Oct. 8, the Dow rose 1.2 percent, while the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.8 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.
