Xbox series X UK stock – live: Currys restock is still available today, Very could be next

LIVE – Updated at 08:42

Update: The Xbox series X is still in stock at Currys , and is available through Xbox All Access at Smyths Toys and Asda. Read on for more details.

The Xbox series X is more than a year old now, but a global shortage of components coupled with a global chip shortage and bottlenecks in the supply chain have left Microsoft’s next-generation console out of stock consistently since launching in the autumn of 2020.

December saw many UK retailers release thousands of stockpiled consoles to jubilant Christmas shoppers, with the likes of VerySmyths ToysGameArgosAsda and Amazon all selling the Xbox series X. But following the holidays the console is once again sold out at most retailers.

When new consoles appear, it’s usually without warning and sells out in minutes as quick-fingered customers snap up the available units as soon as they arrive. That’s why we launched our Xbox series X stock tracking liveblog, where we track every UK retailer at once to bring you instant stock alerts. That way, you’ve got a fighting chance of picking up a console before it sells out again.

We’ll also bring you tips and advice for beating the crowds to bag an Xbox series X, including which sites to pay attention to, where the Xbox might be restocked next, and how to register your interest for new consoles before they go on sale.

Which UK retailers stock the Xbox series X?

What is Xbox All Access?

08:42 , Alistair Charlton © Provided by The Independent (Xbox)

Since the series X is currently available through the Xbox All Access programme at both Smyths Toys and Asda, we thought we’d explain exactly what that means.

Instead of buying the Xbox series X outright for £449, Xbox All Access lets you pay monthly using a 0% loan from Klarna. This costs £28.99 a month for 24 months, making for a total payment of £695.76.

So while that makes the console seem more expensive, your monthly payment also includes Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which gives you access to over 100 games (new and old), ready to be downloaded and played. There’s no need to actually buy the games individually. As well as the game, Game Pass Ultimate includes Xbox Live Gold, so you can play against others online, EA Play membership, and discounts on games and add-ons.

All in, it’s actually slightly cheaper, to the tune of about £20, to pay for All Access for 24 months, compared to buying the console outright then paying for Game Pass Ultimate.

Good morning

08:29 , Alistair Charlton

Welcome back to another day of Xbox hunting! If you’re planning on tackling the high street today then we strongly recommend your biggest winter coat; it’s pretty chilly out there.

As for online shoppers, we bring good news – a couple of Xbox series X bundles are still (still!) available at Currys, ready to buy right now. If you’d rather pay monthly, the console is also available through Xbox All Access at Asda.

We’ll be here all day to bring you more Xbox restocking news as soon as we get it.

Xbox stock trackers, signing off

Wednesday 5 January 2022 16:50 , Steve Hogarty

That’s all from us for another day, thank you for joining the Xbox series X stock tracking liveblog.

Currys is still hanging in there, with its accessory bundles. Meanwhile Asda and Smyths Toys are also still taking applications for Xbox All Access, the pay monthly alternative to paying full price for the console up front. Smyths also has some stock available for click and collect at local branches.

If you’re holding out for the console to appear back in stock all by itself, then join us again tomorrow when we’ll be resuming the hunt.

Who might restock the Xbox series X next?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 16:19 , Steve Hogarty

We’re pinning our hopes on another Very restock next Tuesday.

Very last had stock on 14 December, though since then the retailer’s supply has completely dried up. Customers could choose from one of a number of optional bundles, including three months of Game Pass and an additional controller.

The retailer is currently selling the official Xbox series S + Rocket League + Fortnite bundle (£249.99, Very.co.uk).

The Seagate storage expansion card (£194.99, Amazon.co.uk) currently has £25 off at Amazon. The solid state hard drive doubles the storage capacity of your Xbox series X, meaning you can store more games and handle the mammoth install size of games like Flight Simulator (£59.99, Very.co.uk).

Meanwhile, there’s a fiver off the Xbox elite wireless controller series 2 (£149.99, Smythstoys.com) over at Smyths Toys. This high-end, professional gaming pad costs almost half as much as an Xbox series S, and has finely tuned hair-triggers and programmable sensitivity levels.

The best TVs for gaming on Xbox series X

Wednesday 5 January 2022 14:23 , Steve Hogarty

To get the most out the Xbox series X, you’ll need a 4K television.

Many next-generation games allow you to choose between a performance mode and a graphics mode. The former downgrades the visuals slightly for smoother framerates, while the latter mode enables higher resolutions and more fancy effects at the expense of framerate.

If your TV only goes up to 1080p, you won’t be getting the most out of your new Xbox series X. To help you upgrade your set without breaking the bank, we’ve pulled together a list of the best 4K TV deals for entertainment, movies and gaming.

Can you buy the Xbox series X at CEX?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 10:40 , Steve Hogarty © Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

We don’t track the availability of the Xbox series X on auction sites or at bright red second-hand electronics stores.

Since launching in 2020, both the PlayStation and the Xbox have become the focus of scalpers – professional resellers who use automated bots to buy up all of the available stock before anybody else, only to resell the console at inflated prices to any shopper willing to pay over the odds. The disparity between supply and demand means that, right now, CEX is selling second-hand Xbox consoles for more than they cost brand new.

It’s up to you whether you want to purchase the Xbox from a reseller, but buying a console in this way encourages more scalping, prolongs the Xbox shortage, and drives up the price of the console for legitimate buyers. We’ll have no part in that shady carry-on.

Is the Xbox series S worth it?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 10:25 , Steve Hogarty © Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

The Xbox series S (£249, Amazon.co.uk) is overlooked as a brilliant games machine capable of playing all the same next-generation games as the Xbox series X.

The console is backwards compatible with older Xbox games and has cheaper hardware inside, meaning some of the fancier graphics options get dialled down. You still get the advantage of faster loading times and a huge performance boost over the Xbox One.

It doesn’t have a disc drive either, so you can only play downloaded games. The hard drive is also half as big, so you need to redownload games more often.

Where is the Xbox series S in stock?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 10:15 , Steve Hogarty © Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

Everyone’s trying to grab the Xbox series X, the most advanced member of the Xbox family, so demand for the less powerful Xbox series S is smaller. The console is easy to find in stock pretty much everywhere.

There’s now an official Xbox series S + Fortnite + Rocket League bundle on the shelves too, costing £249.99. You can find it at Very, Game, Amazon and more.

Can you buy an Xbox on the high street?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 10:05 , Steve Hogarty

Yes, but consoles are currently as tricky to find in stores as they are online. Your best bet is to try your local branch of Smyths Toys, as the retailer’s site reports a bunch of stock available to click and collect today. But these in-store restocks are often very small and sell out quickly, usually within hours.

Game stores each have a Twitter account, which they use to promote the arrival of Xbox stock. This Twitter list is a great way to keep an eye on all Game store Twitter accounts. Meanwhile, the Smyths website has a tool for checking on console stock levels at all of its UK stores.

The Currys SSD bundle

Wednesday 5 January 2022 09:45 , Steve Hogarty

You can also purchase the Xbox series X as part of a bundle (£659, Currys.co.uk) containing the Seagate 1TB expansion hard drive . We’ve seen the expansion drive sell for around £190 in the past, so this is close to what you’d pay if you were to buy both products separately.

© Provided by The Independent (Amazon)

Of the two available Xbox series X bundles at Currys this morning, we think with the extra hard drive is the best value option here, if you can afford it. Expanding the Xbox’s capacity gives you more room for downloads, and these fancy modern games are taking up more and more space.

The Xbox series X is in stock at Currys

Wednesday 5 January 2022 09:35 , Steve Hogarty

Let’s recap these two Currys bundles, which are still in stock. You can’t buy the console separately – a big reason why it’s not selling out – and bear in mind that the Xbox series X costs £449 by itself.

The first bundle (£589, Currys.co.uk) comes with the premium elite controller . The fancy high-end accessory costs £150 alone, and is designed for specialist, super-serious gamers with cash to burn.

Where else has the Xbox series X in stock?

Wednesday 5 January 2022 09:04 , Steve Hogarty

The Xbox series X is also available at Asda through the Xbox All Access programme this morning.

The pay monthly scheme lets you spread the cost of the console over two years. You pay nothing up front, then £28.99 per month, and you get two years of Game Pass Ultimate (worth £10.99 per month) included. Game Pass is a Netflix-style games-on-demand service giving you access to a library of over 100 games.

Put the calculator down. That’s £712.76 worth of stuff for £695.76 over the two years. It’s a 0 per cent finance offer, so you don’t pay interest. You do need to pass a credit check with Klarna, and be sure you’re in a position to keep making the payments, but you can also pay the entire balance off early for no extra fee.

It’s good value, we can recommend grabbing a console this way.

The Xbox series X is in stock at Smyths Toys

Wednesday 5 January 2022 08:45 , Steve Hogarty

There are hundreds of Xbox series X consoles available to click and collect from Smyths Toys stores up and down the country this morning.

Pop your nearest town into the search box on the Smyths Toys site to check if your nearest branch has any available stock.

It’s not possible to order these for delivery, so you might need to hop on your bicycle.

Well that’s all from us for today, thank you for joining us here on the Xbox series X stock tracking liveblog.

Those Currys Xbox bundles are still there, if you can stomach spending an extra £150 to £190 on some accessories. Asda and Smyths Toys are also still taking applications for Xbox All Access, the pay monthly alternative to paying full price for the console up front, while Smyths also has some stock available for click and collect from local branches.

If you’re holding out for the console to appear back in stock without any bundled controllers and what have you, then please join us again tomorrow when we’ll be resuming the search. Bye bye!

The Xbox series X headsets to look out for

Tuesday 4 January 2022 16:22 , Steve Hogarty

The Xbox series X doesn’t come a headset, but it’s compatible with all existing headsets for the Xbox One. The Xbox wireless controller (£49.99, Box.co.uk) also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can plug in your regular headphones to have game audio piped directly into your ears, which is ideal for gaming after bedtime, or if you’re sharing a room with somebody you don’t want to disturb.

If you need to upgrade or you don’t have your own headset yet and want to chat with friends online, Microsoft sells the wireless Xbox series X headset separately (£89.99, Game.co.uk). Lots of third-party manufacturers make Xbox compatible headsets too. We’ve rounded up the best gaming headsets you can buy today.

What is cloud gaming on Xbox?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 15:31 , Steve Hogarty

This might take the edge off not being able to find the Xbox series X in stock: you’re able to play many of the newest Xbox series X games on any Xbox, old or new, thanks to cloud gaming.

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams a live video feed of games directly from Microsoft’s servers to your console, laptop, or even your smartphone, without any downloads or installation. You can jump straight into AAA games just as easily as you can press play on a YouTube video.

You’ll need a fast internet connection and membership to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (£32.99, Argos.co.uk), which unlocks on-demand access to more than 100 games.

This also enables Xbox gaming on any Windows laptop. In the market for a new one? We’ve rounded up the best laptops of 2022.

Where is the Xbox series S in stock?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 14:31 , Steve Hogarty © Provided by The Independent (Xbox)

The Xbox series S is the smaller and less powerful version of the Xbox series X, but it’s still a brilliant games machine. One huge advantage it has over its more advanced sibling is that you can actually buy one.

The Xbox series S is fully backwards compatible with old Xbox games and runs all of the same next-generation games as the Xbox series X, but at a lower resolution and with some of the graphics options dialled down. It has half the storage space and doesn’t have a disc drive, so you can’t play your physical games collection, only the games that you download.

For that reason the Xbox series X is considered by purists to be the “true” next-generation Xbox, and so the more powerful console is in much higher demand. This means it’s relatively easy to find the Xbox series S in stock online.

You can find the console right now at Very, Game, Amazon and more, with Rocket League and Fortnite thrown in for free at £249.99.

What is Xbox All Access?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 11:31 , Steve Hogarty © Provided by The Independent Forza Horizon 5, included with Game Pass Ultimate (Microsoft)

Since Asda and Smyths Toys still have some Xbox series X stock available via Xbox All Access, here’s a quick explanation of what that is. Simply put, Xbox All Access is a way of buying an Xbox series console (either the X or the S) in monthly instalments instead of one upfront payment.

But here’s the good bit. Included in the monthly cost is a two year Game Pass Ultimate membership, a Netflix-style games-on-demand service giving you free access to more than 100 premium games, including Halo Infinite, Minecraft, Forza Horizon 5 and many others. On top of that, Xbox All Access customers also get EA Play, which gives you in-game rewards and access to a library of Electronic Arts games.

Xbox All Access is priced at £28.99 per month for 24 months for the Xbox series X, and is available right now from Asda and Smyths Toys. The less powerful Xbox series S is £20.99 a month, also for 24 months. Both are offered with 0 per cent finance.

When did the Microsoft Store last have Xbox stock?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 10:30 , Steve Hogarty

You’d think the official Xbox store would be swimming in consoles, but the retailer has to fight in the mud for the console just like everybody else.

The online-only store last had the Xbox series X in stock on 21 December, and before that on 17 December when re-opened orders for the limited edition Halo Infinite Xbox bundle.

Does AO have the Xbox series X in stock?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 10:10 , Steve Hogarty

Let’s rattle through a few more retailers and when we predict they’ll restock the Xbox.

AO last restocked the Xbox series X on the 30 December, and before that on 10 December. The retailer loves a bundle, and tends to include all manner of extra accessories such as a controllers and games.

AO hasn’t restocked in January yet, but we’re estimating another drop there next week.

When did Argos last restock the Xbox series X?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 09:47 , Steve Hogarty

Currys and Smyths Toys might be the heroes of the moment, but we’re expecting other retailers to receive shipments of Microsoft’s new console soon too.

High on our list is Argos, which last restocked on 21 December. Argos faithfully restocks the console roughly once every four weeks, so we’re predicting another batch to arrive early next week.

The best way to buy an Xbox series X from Argos is through the app. Add the console to your wish list, which lets you slip the Xbox into your basket in advance for a speedy checkout when the time comes.

Searching for a PS5 this January?

Tuesday 4 January 2022 09:27 , Steve Hogarty

Over in PlayStation 5 land, Sony’s next-generation console is also struggling with supply chain issues. Generally, the PS5 is restocked more frequently than the Xbox series X, but higher demand sees the available stock snapped up almost instantly.

The Xbox series X is in stock at Currys

Tuesday 4 January 2022 09:07 , Steve Hogarty

There are two Xbox bundles at Currys, and they’ve been in stock for weeks.

For reference, the console by itself costs £449 – so let’s take a look at these deals in that light.

  • Xbox series X + elite wireless controller: £589, Currys.co.uk
  • Xbox series X + Seagate 1TB hard drive: £644, Currys.co.uk

For £589, the first bundle includes the ridiculously elite premium controller, which normally retails at £150, three times as much as a regular pad. While it’s undeniably a cool accessory – you can swap out the thumb sticks and adjust the tension in the shoulder triggers to your preference – you get a perfectly good standard controller with the Xbox series X anyway. Only pro-level players and specialist collectors would bother with the fancy version.

You can also purchase the Xbox series X as part of a bundle containing the Seagate 1TB expansion hard drive for £644. We’ve seen the expansion drive sell for around £190 in the past, so this is slightly cheaper than buying both products separately.

We reckon the bundle with the extra hard drive is the best value option here, if you can afford it. Expanding the Xbox’s capacity gives you more room for downloads, and games are taking up more and more space.

The Xbox series X is in stock at Smyths Toys

Tuesday 4 January 2022 08:33 , Steve Hogarty

There are currently 10 Xboxes available to click and collect from Smyths Toys in Beckton, London.

To get there, get off at Gallions Reach DLR station and hop on the 366 to Redbridge. Continue past the gas works. If you get to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, you’ve gone too far.

Well that’s all from us for another day, thank you for joining us here on the Xbox series X stock tracking liveblog.

Those Currys Xbox bundles are still ticking along nicely – the expensive add-ons seem to be putting people off – while Asda and Smyths Toys are also taking applications for Xbox All Access, the pay monthly alternative to paying full price for the console up front.

Why doesn’t Amazon have the Xbox series X?

Monday 3 January 2022 16:21 , Steve Hogarty

Amazon is completely sold out of the Xbox series X in the UK, and last restocked just before Christmas. In recent weeks the retail giant has had availability of Microsoft’s new console in Germany, France and Spain.

If you’re thinking about importing the Xbox from Europe you might want to consider some of the hidden costs first. Importing items above a certain value from the EU incurs a set of taxes, delivery charges and fees. Because of the added red tape required, many courier services have hiked up their prices too.

You can expect to pay at least £100 extra to buy an Xbox this way, but on the upside your console will have a laid-back continental attitude and generally pleasing French electro vibes.

You can play Xbox series X games anywhere

Monday 3 January 2022 14:29 , Steve Hogarty

Don’t have an Xbox series X yet? Well you can still play Xbox series X games. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can play a selection of Xbox titles on their PC, phone or laptop right now using Microsoft’s cloud streaming service.

The game’s visuals are streamed to you over the internet almost instantaneously, so you don’t need a gaming PC, just a fast enough connection. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams games from Microsoft’s servers to a bunch of compatible devices, including the previous generation Xbox consoles. Cloud gaming requires a membership to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (£32.99, Argos.co.uk), which unlocks on-demand access to more than 100 games.

What’s the best VPN for the Xbox?

Monday 3 January 2022 13:31 , Steve Hogarty

A virtual private network can trick websites and streaming platforms into thinking you’re logging in from a country of your choosing, which means you can access TV shows and movies not normally available in your region. They’re also useful for hiding your browsing habits from your ISP or network operator, allowing you to bypass firewalls, censorship and other restrictions.

You might not think this matters much for the Xbox series X, but with the wealth of streaming apps available on the machine, it’s worth considering getting a VPN that plays nicely with the console. You can’t install a VPN directly to an Xbox series X, but you can install one on your laptop and route your console’s internet connection through that. You can also install some VPNs on routers to cover all of your devices in one go.

A slow VPN will really impact your ping during online gaming, so to keep your Xbox series X running at peak performance you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose is fast and responsive enough to avoid lag and dropouts when playing online. Check out our round-up of the best VPNs for torrenting, streaming and gaming.

Hunting for a PS5 this January?

Monday 3 January 2022 11:30 , Steve Hogarty

People like to refer to the PlayStation 5 as the “rival” next-generation console to the Xbox series X, but we prefer to think of them as old friends. One thing they have in common is their relative scarcity, as Sony’s next-generation console struggles with precisely the same supply chain issues as Microsoft’s own machine.

Over on the PS5 stock tracking liveblog we’re tracking the availability of the giant white monolith, so head over there for the latest tips on where it might appear next.

The Xbox series X is now sold out at Smyths Toys

Monday 3 January 2022 10:47 , Steve Hogarty

We were beginning to think the Xbox series X was falling out of fashion, but at last the console has sold out at Smyths Toys.

Applications for Xbox All Access appear to still be available.

Those more expensive Xbox series X bundles are still in stock at Currys.

  • Xbox series X + elite wireless controller: £589, Currys.co.uk
  • Xbox series X + Seagate 1TB hard drive: £644, Currys.co.uk

The best upcoming Xbox series X games in 2022

Let’s pause our stock tracking efforts momentarily to gaze into the future. Here are just some of the Xbox series X games coming out later this year that are worth your attention.

  • Rainbow Six Extraction – 20 January
  • Dying Light 2 – 4 February
  • Rumbleverse – 8 February
  • Elden Ring – 25 February
  • Stalker 2 – 28 April
  • Starfield – 11 November

Starfield is a particular highlight. Bethesda’s first original RPG in 25 years is being hailed as “Skyrim in space” and – following Microsoft’s acquisition of the studio as part of a $7.5bn deal – will be exclusive to PC and Xbox when it launches in November.

Yes, that’s a ‘b’.

Want another reason the find an Xbox series X in stock? N64 classic Goldeneye 007 is coming to Xbox soon, if a leaked set of achievements is to be believed.

TrueAchievements, which keeps a database of unlockable in-game achievements, spotted a set of new entries pertaining to the 1997 first-person shooter. Other details are thin on the ground, and it’s not yet obvious if the game will be a complete remake or a faithful rendition of the original game. Hands-down the best James Bond game ever made, late night multiplayer sessions of Goldeneye 007 were a mainstay of sleepovers for anyone growing up in the 90s.

British studio Rare, which developed the game for Nintendo, has since been bought out by Microsoft. Complicated licensing issues between various stakeholders have put the brakes on most attempts to port the game to new consoles.

This year marks 25 years since the game debuted, so we’re keeping our ears to the ground for more news at it happens.

The Xbox series X is in stock at Currys

Monday 3 January 2022 09:40 , Steve Hogarty

  • Xbox series X + elite wireless controller: £589, Currys.co.uk
  • Xbox series X + Seagate 1TB hard drive: £644, Currys.co.uk

Currys is selling two Xbox series X bundles. The first includes the premium elite controller for £589. The console alone usually costs £449, while the fancy high-end controller costs a startling £150.

You can also purchase the Xbox series X as part of a bundle containing the Seagate 1TB expansion hard drive for £644. We’ve seen the expansion drive sell for around £190 in the past, so this is close to what you’d pay if you were to buy both products separately.

We reckon the bundle with the extra hard drive is the best value option here, if you can afford it. Expanding the Xbox’s capacity gives you more room for downloads, and games are taking up more and more space.

Where is the Xbox series S in stock?

We don’t flag stock alerts for the Xbox series S, for the simple reason that it’s nearly always in stock. You can find the console right now at Very, Game, Amazon and more, with Rocket League and Fortnite thrown in for free at £249.99.

Why is this cheaper version of the console so readily available you ask? Well, while it runs all of the same next-generation games as the Xbox series X, it has less powerful components and so in-game graphics aren’t quite as sharp as they appear on the more advanced console. It doesn’t have a disc drive either, so you can only play downloaded games. The hard drive is also smaller, so you might need to add more storage to fit your games.

We still think it’s a brilliant games machine though, and a viable alternative to the top-end Xbox series X.

Where else has the Xbox series X in stock?

Monday 3 January 2022 08:58 , Steve Hogarty

Smyths Toys isn’t the only retailer stocking the Xbox series X this morning, the console is also available at Asda through the Xbox All Access programme.

The pay monthly scheme lets you spread the cost of the console over two years, a bit like a phone contract. It costs £28.99 per month and you pay nothing up front, and get membership to Game Pass Ultimate included. That’s Microsoft’s Netflix-style games-on-demand service, and usually costs £10.99 per month.

At the end of the term you keep your Xbox, and end up paying slightly less than you would have done if you’d bought the console and Game Pass Ultimate separately.
