FTSE 100 Rises as Miners, Oil Stocks, Sainsbury Gain

0910 GMT – The FTSE 100 Index rises 0.6%, or 46 points to 7537 as miners and oil stocks gain after positive trading in Asia and a rise in crude prices. BHP, Antofagasta, Glencore, BP, Shell and Rio Tinto are all among the biggest risers after markets in mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan all closed firmly in positive territory. The price of a barrel of Brent crude increases 0.4% to $84.08. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s gains more than 1% after the U.K. grocer said third quarter like-for-like sales including fuel fell, but upgraded its full-year market expectations on lower costs, market-share growth and higher Christmas grocery volumes. JD Sports Fashion Shares Drop After Update

0925 GMT – JD Sports Fashion shares top the FTSE 100 fallers, down 2.6% after the U.K. clothing retailer forecast better-than-expected annual pretax profit, but said it was wary of ongoing pandemic and supply chain-related issues. While the update pointed to robust trading, uncertainty with regards to the pandemic cannot yet be completely dismissed, Interactive Investor says. “Brexit and supply-chain challenges are also an issue, costs are rising, while indebted consumers globally now face potentially higher interest rates,” the trading firm’s Keith Bowman says. “That said, JD’s track record for expansion and acquisitions is strong, with growth in the U.S. proving its most recent focus.” (philip.waller@wsj.com)
