Apple appeals against investigation from UK regulator over cloud gaming

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has appealed the November investigation by the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority over its role in the mobile browser market as it pertains to cloud gaming.

In a filing with the Competition Appeal Tribunal, Apple (AAPL) lawyers wrote the investigation should reviewed and interim relief should be granted on the basis that the decision from the CMA, known as the MIR Decision, is “quashed” and there is “a declaration that the MIR Decision and market investigation purportedly launched by reference to it are invalid and of no legal effect.”

In November, the Competition and Markets Authority launched a probe into Apple (AAPL) and Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) “effective duopoly” on mobile browsers and cloud gaming.

At the time, the CMA said that 97% of all mobile web browsers in the U.K. last year came from either Apple’s (AAPL) or Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) browser engines, so any restrictions could result in a “major impact on users’ experiences.”

In a statement provided to Reuters, the CMA said it would defend its position and continue to progress on its investigation.

Apple (AAPL) shares were fractionally lower in Friday morning trade.

Earlier this week, it was reported Apple (AAPL) is working on new smart home products to further compete in the space.
