A private investor from Columbus, Ohio, won the 2022 Barron’s forecasting challenge, topping more than 3,000 entrants in the contest that ran in late 2021. Joe McCleary, 36, scored 13 out of a maximum possible 18. The quiz had 14 multiple-choice questions about financial and political developments in 2022, as well as the top medal winner at the 2022 Winter Olympics (Norway). Queries about the best and worst stock in the Dow Jones Industrial Average were worth two points each.
A former financial analyst, McCleary does a lot of work before investing. “I read the SEC filings and conference-call transcripts,” he says, then develops free-cash-flow models and intrinsic-value estimates. He has contributed to the online forum Value Investors Club.
