U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.03%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Services and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Technology and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.18%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.00% or 2.12 points to trade at 108.12 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 1.28% or 3.44 points to end at 273.00 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.06% or 0.38 points to 36.28 in late trade.

Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.80% or 2.07 points to trade at 112.93 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.30% or 2.51 points to end at 190.74 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed 1.22% or 3.16 points to 256.54.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which rose 10.25% to 363.28, Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) which was up 8.99% to settle at 116.09 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which gained 8.59% to close at 14.53.

The worst performers were Nextera Energy Inc (NYSE:NEE) which was down 8.71% to 76.59 in late trade, Nasdaq Inc (NASDAQ:NDAQ) which lost 5.85% to settle at 58.30 and Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which was down 5.50% to 243.80 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Minerva Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:UTRS) which rose 72.37% to 0.38, Alvarium Tiedemann Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ALTI) which was up 65.41% to settle at 15.40 and GeoVax Labs Inc (NASDAQ:GOVX) which gained 58.89% to close at 1.11.

The worst performers were Grom Social Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:GROM) which was down 35.63% to 2.06 in late trade, Helbiz Inc (NASDAQ:HLBZ) which lost 29.76% to settle at 0.29 and Waitr Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ASAP) which was down 27.79% to 0.42 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1648 to 1383 and 139 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1909 rose and 1749 declined, while 206 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.63% to 19.08.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.61% or 11.75 to $1,947.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.46% or 0.37 to hit $80.50 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.26 to trade at $86.39 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.28% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.46% to 129.54.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 101.40.
