Plans have been withdrawn to demolish a former police station and replace it with 32 new retirement apartments in Hampshire. Churchill Retirement Living submitted plans for the site off Southampton Road, Lymington in December 2022.
Since then, 54 public comments have been made – 53 of which object to the proposals. Despite describing the location as “suitable for retirement living”, Churchill has withdrawn its plans.
The news will be welcomed by those who objected to the plans, with many believing Lymington does not require further retirement housing. Adam Drodge commented: “The amount of people and families looking for homes for themselves in the area is huge. Flats or apartments for families with young children to get the on the council ladder would be more appropriate! Particularly in the heart of lymington.”

The former Lymington Police Station has been vacant since 2020 at which point officers serving the New Forest West moved into their new premises at the New Forest District Council offices on Avenue Road. The building was at the time described as “outdated and no longer fit-for-purpose”.
Churchill previously had an application for the site off Southampton Road dismissed at appeal by the Planning Inspectorate. The planned development would have consisted of one and two-bedroom apartments, alongside communal facilities and parking.
Those who have objected to the plans submitted at end of last year, believe the focus should be on providing “affordable housing” in Lymington. Katie Gates commented: “There is currently an excess of retirement properties in Lymington as well as surrounding areas. Many of these properties remain vacant and unsold.
“There should be a switch in focus and priority should sit on the development of affordable housing for sale or let for working age and younger residents of the area. Through personal experience, this type of housing is limited / non-existent.”
