Social Security payments 2024: Some recipients will get an extra check in November

Some Social Security recipients will receive two payments in November — once on Nov. 1, 2024, and another one on Nov. 29, 2024, according to the Social Security Administration’s 2024-2025 calendar for payments.

But the Nov. 29 payment is not a bonus payment. It is a workaround to get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients their benefits on days when banks are not closed.

The first day of the December this year falls on a Sunday, when banks are usually closed.

However, SSI recipients will still receive a check in December intended to be January’s payment. It will just be at the end of the month on Dec. 31, 2024.

This trend of receiving the next month’s check in the previous month will continue for the next few months of 2025 until March, when no checks will be delivered. After that, the payment schedule will return to normal.

Most Social Security recipients get their payments on the second, third or fourth Wednesday, depending on what day they were born.

However, SSI recipients, which include the blind, disabled and people at least 65 years old without many financial resources, typically get their payments on the first day of each month.

Receiving two payments in the same month for SSI recipients is a unique situation, however, as most years the first of the month falls on a weekday.

The Social Security Administration also announced the cost-of-living adjustment for 2025, which is a 2.5% increase in benefits. It is one of the smallest benefit increases in years.
