It may sound confusing at first, but this is actually good news for eligible Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. While there will be no SSI payment issued during March, beneficiaries are not losing any money. Instead, the payment will be sent early. Due to a calendar-related scheduling adjustment by the Social Security Administration, the March SSI benefit is being advanced by two days and paid at the end of February, reported Futbolete. This means recipients receive their funds sooner than usual, not later. SSI payments are typically sent on the first day of each month. When that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration issues payments on the previous business day. In 2026, March 1 falls on a Sunday, which triggers an early payment. As a result, the March SSI benefit will be deposited on Friday, February 27.
Because the payment is sent ahead of time, SSI recipients will not see a separate deposit during the month of March. The next SSI payment after February 27 will be the April benefit, which is scheduled to be issued on Thursday, April 2. This creates a longer-than-usual gap between payments, even though no benefits are lost.
It’s important to note that this adjustment applies only to SSI recipients. According to Futbolete, people receiving Social Security retirement benefits, survivor benefits, or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are not affected. Those payments follow a different schedule based on birth dates and will continue without interruption.

SSI recipients will also see a boost from the annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as COLA. The increase is set at 2.8% in 2026, a change made by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to help benefits keep pace with inflation. The adjustment is based on a federal price index and affects the maximum monthly payment amounts.
Under the new rates, an individual receiving the full federal SSI benefit can get up to $994 per month in 2026, reported Futbolete. For couples in which both people qualify, the maximum combined payment rises to $1,491 per month. Those classified as ‘essential persons’ – individuals who live with and care for an SSI recipient – may receive an additional payment of up to $498 monthly. Some states also provide supplemental payments, which can further increase total benefits.
According to Futbolete, to qualify for SSI, applicants must have limited income and resources. Eligibility requires being age 65 or older, blind, or disabled for at least 12 months. Countable resources – such as cash, bank accounts, or property you own – must stay below $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples, and recipients must meet residency and citizenship requirements.
