Dothan City School Superintendent Dennis Coe, who stepped in as interim leader following the departure of embattled former superintendent Phyllis Edwards in September 2020, will retire next summer.

In a letter to school board members dated Nov. 13, Coe signaled his intent to step down at the end of his current contract expires June 30, 2025.

Coe served as chief operations officer when Edwards left in September 2020 following a stormy tenure during which she implemented significant restructuring, including the consolidation of the city’s two high schools and the creation of a single preparatory academy replacing city middle schools.

Coe was hired as permanent school chief after six months serving as interim superintendent on a 4-3 vote of the school board; three members opposed the selection because they thought hiring from within rather than reviewing all external applicants was unfair.
