Plans to build retirement homes with shops to serve residents have been approved.
Stockton Council gave outline planning permission for the project which would see retirement apartments or residential care accommodation with 60 bed spaces built in Ingleby Barwick.
Tiviot Way Investments Ltd, which is behind the plans, said it would build a food store, four “convenience facilities”, an outdoor terrace area and up to four self-build residential plots.
It had attracted 35 letters of objection from residents who raised concerns about the loss of green open space, extra traffic, impact on wildlife and the retail units which were described as “not necessary”.
Council planning officers said, while previous plans for 40 apartments had been withdrawn, a scheme with amenities beyond housing had always been part of the plans and was considered an acceptable development.
Officers said the area at Little Maltby Farm in Low Lane, High Leven, was earmarked for housing and any concerns could be addressed with planning conditions once more detailed plans are submitted.
Joe Smith, the agent for the developer, told Stockton Council’s planning committee the development would bring employment opportunities and economic benefits.
“It will provide essential services and amenities within walking distances of residents,” he said.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said councillors unanimously approved the plans.
