Best Oil Stocks

With a market cap of $54 billion, Occidental Petroleum is in a different class than the larger names above. Despite this, it has been the stock to own over the last year, even amid a sector where most stocks accelerated upwards.

OXY’s share price mushroomed by more than 124% in 2022, making it the best performer in the S&P 500 last year.

Occidental is notable for being one of Warren Buffett’s biggest stock holdings. Buffett began accumulating his stake in the company in September 2022, then bought more in March 2023. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway now owns approximately 200 million shares of OXY, a 22.2% stake.

The company has been a dependable dividend generator, and its five-year average dividend yield remains above 5%, while the total shareholder yield is north of 6%.

A point to note is that OXY’s cash position is relatively low, at $1.23 billion. This is partially indicative of the size of the company versus other companies on this list, but Occidental’s cash per share is also the lowest at $1.36 per share.
