U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.09%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.09%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.67%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 3.19% or 10.02 points to trade at 324.26 at the close. Meanwhile, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 2.79% or 13.57 points to end at 499.36 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 2.42% or 1.40 points to 59.35 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which fell 3.52% or 9.21 points to trade at 252.29 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.29% or 3.49 points to end at 267.40 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was down 0.42% or 0.57 points to 134.73.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Smith AO Corporation (NYSE:AOS) which rose 13.72% to 67.73, International Paper (NYSE:IP) which was up 10.66% to settle at 41.82 and PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which gained 9.54% to close at 56.95.

The worst performers were Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) which was down 5.77% to 100.28 in late trade, Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) which lost 4.89% to settle at 34.61 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) which was down 3.52% to 252.29 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Motorsport Gaming Us LLC (NASDAQ:MSGM) which rose 713.69% to 21.40, Mobile Global Esports Inc (NASDAQ:MGAM) which was up 158.00% to settle at 2.58 and Atlas Technical Consultants Inc (NASDAQ:ATCX) which gained 121.76% to close at 12.13.

The worst performers were Sidus Space Inc (NASDAQ:SIDU) which was down 53.94% to 0.41 in late trade, Nuvve Holding Corp (NASDAQ:NVVE) which lost 40.43% to settle at 1.37 and Evoke Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EVOK) which was down 29.74% to 4.04 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2572 to 484 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2858 rose and 847 declined, while 140 ended unchanged.

Shares in PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 9.54% or 4.96 to 56.95. Shares in Sidus Space Inc (NASDAQ:SIDU) fell to all time lows; falling 53.94% or 0.48 to 0.41.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.76% to 19.39.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.27% or 5.20 to $1,928.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.55% or 1.21 to hit $79.11 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.28% or 1.08 to trade at $85.58 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.20% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.23% to 130.15.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.19% at 101.89.
